Career History

I have painted all my life, but it is only when I retired from my original career in 2008 that I had the chance to pursue my lifelong passion. I studied at Wirral Metropolitan College in Birkenhead, with Kim Harley, before moving into my degree with the Open College of the Arts, under the tutelage of David Winning (Neo Artists Bolton). I have also studied life drawing at the Bluecoat Gallery in Liverpool under the tutelage of Roy Munday, and still participate in a regular life drawing group in Liverpool. I initially started as a member of the 104 Duke Street Studios in Liverpool, but now work out of Arena Studios and Gallery in Liverpool http://arenastudiosandgallery.com , a collection of over 20 artists. In October 2014 I was appointed as one of the 4 Directors of Arena. I am also part of a stable of artists linked to two other Liverpool collectives. I am represented at View Two Gallery in Liverpool, and Collage and Collectables Victoria Street Liverpool and in a number of private collections.

My Approach

I tend to paintout doors when I can, picking up bits of litter sticking them onto the canvas and painting into them. I feel this gives a stronger sense of place and sometimes can lead to new ideas. It also means that I don't get drawn into the detail of a place or scene, preferring to try and capture the sense of place. As it is important to be speedy when working outside, before the light or weather changes, I have developed the use of simplified abstract shapes and form, and use a limited palette which represents the industrial subject matter I focus on. Although known for my gritty landscapes I also produce figurative work based around some of the issues common to human existance.
